Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
