The star has given the full amount of his £25k award prize money to the trust for venues, which operates to protect the UK's independent concert spaces.

The star was presented with the cheque on 16 October as his new release the album was named the best record of the previous year.

He has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I would not have achieved this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I played around the area, and further afield, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These locations are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Fender also joined in, generating over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to help thirty-eight small stages across the UK.

These funds assisted venues that were facing imminent closure due to difficulties arising from floods, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained monetary aid in upgrading infrastructure and gear that directly benefitted artists and concertgoers.

"The concept that revenue from concerts in major spaces backs the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has commented.

Additionally 1994 winners they gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was identified with the condition.

"Winning was quite enough," remarked artist Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected another person's life."

In the past week, the trust shared it had rescued a couple of local spots in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.
